The early game comes down to two things: getting the hammer out of the barred room at the Entrance Campsite, and making keys at the forge. The hammer comes first, by way of the water tunnel and the ceiling pipes. After that you find the prison key in a basement chest, forge the iron key and the three-piece Jaguar key, and take the silver dagger from behind the Jaguar door.

Entrance Campsite and Upper Rooms
Turn the wheel before swimming across, then use the overhead pipes and ledges to reach the hammer room. The hammer breaks rusty bars and opens more pathways upstairs; watch for eels in the water and leave inventory space for pickups.
Forge and Jaguar Key
The prison key is in the basement chest with the club; burn webs with a torch when searching for its destination. Supply coal and scrap metal and operate the forge's upper lever for the iron key, then cast all Jaguar key pieces from their molds to open the Jaguar door and collect the silver dagger.
